Dr. Peter Shorter M.D.

 Dr. Peter Shorter is a highly experienced internal medicine physician with specialized expertise in Hypertension and Kidney Disease. Known for his compassionate and collaborative approach, Dr. Shorter is deeply committed to partnering with patients, helping them take charge of their health with clarity, confidence, and personalized care.


A native of coastal Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Shorter earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He returned to New England to complete his advanced training with Brown Medicine. There, he served at several esteemed institutions, including Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, and the Providence VA Medical Center.


Dr. Shorter began his tenure at South County Hospital in 2014 as a nephrologist before transitioning to hospitalist medicine alongside Dr. Abbruzzese. His exceptional dedication and clinical excellence were recognized in 2022 when he was honored as South County Hospital’s Physician of the Year.


Affectionately known as "Dr. Pete" by patients and colleagues alike, he is excited to continue delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in collaboration with Dr. Sal.

Dr. Salvatore Abbruzzese D.O.

Dr. Abbruzzese is a board-certified internal medicine physician and proud Rhode Island native. With deep roots in the community, he is passionate about building meaningful, long-lasting relationships with his patients. In June 2024, he launched his concierge medicine practice with a vision to deliver exceptional, highly personalized care—continuing his commitment to excellence in every aspect of his patients’ health and well-being. 


  Dr. Sal received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency training at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He spent ten years practicing in Hawaii, where he provided comprehensive care at Kauai Medical Clinic and served as a hospitalist at Castle Medical Center. During his time at Castle, a facility recognized for its dedication to delivering high-quality, community-centered care, Dr. Sal played a key role in managing complex inpatient cases and supporting continuity of care for a diverse patient population. 


He served as a hospitalist at South County Hospital from 2014 to 2023. During his tenure, he held leadership roles including two years as Vice President and two years as President of the Medical Staff. In addition, he has provided care to the Block Island community through his work at the Block Island Medical Center.

Nicole Niles, Office Manager

Nicole, a South County native, spends her days at the office overseeing general administrative functions and activities.  She creates and maintains a pleasant office environment, ensuring high levels of organizational effectiveness, record keeping and most importantly top-notch communication with the physicians and patients.  She dedicates herself to responding to patient calls promptly and efficiently.  Nicole also is a trained phlebotomist working for South County Hospital for over 10 years, that along with heading the office at South County Primary Care, her experience and level of professionalism is unmatched.  She looks forward to greeting you at your next appointment.  And when she's not in the office you can find her on her lobster boat, Scooter.

We are excited to introduce Manal, otherwise know as "M", our new receptionist.  Manal brings a positive attitude and a strong work ethic to our team, always eager to assist patients with a friendly and welcoming demeanor. With a passion for providing exceptional service, she is dedicated to ensuring that every interaction is prompt and efficient, making your visit to our practice a smooth and pleasant experience. Whether you're scheduling an appointment or seeking assistance, Manal is here to help with a smile and a can-do attitude.
